Description

The arrival of Cruise Port The Hague Holland

For many years, The Hague’s 100 year old harbour, apart from fisherman and yachting, was also the principal domain of the Norfolk Line; a container transport and ferry company with multiple daily operations between The Hague and the United Kingdom and Ireland. With the Norfolk Line’s departure in late 2006 to the Port of Rotterdam, the vacated site offered a substantial and unique redevelopment opportunity. The site boasts a stunning location directly on the seafront, with an existing access road infrastructure and extensive urban facilities all within a stone’s throw. The municipality of the Town of The Hague’s invited various parties to deliver proposals for an urban redevelopment. A unique combination of three companies, AM Real Estate, Vestia, and Züblin Grenada, combined their national and international expertise in respectively urban development, housing and cruise ship facilities development.
As a natural coalition they reflected upon the site’s maritime history and future potential, and of course upon the possibility to create a new and unique waterfront for The Hague appealing to the towns strategic goal to use its potential as a large town located on the edge of the Ocean.

The cruise terminal complex is situated in the centre of a dredged manoeuvring basin for the largest cruise ships. A land reclamation around the basin will be developed into a new harbour city, comprising 800-1200 units as apartments, townhouses, condominiums and sea view villa’s. This has a potential of creating an extremely attractive waterfront. Of course this will enhance the arrival experience of visitors. The revenues of the real estate development integrated with the cruise terminal complex as well as the housing scheme development on the land reclamation are supposed to be the source of finance for the maritime infrastructure. As such the project can be fully privately developed and financing is not depending on revenues from shipping
