In order to accommodate the growth of cruise shipping in NW Europa the developers consortium Cruise Port The Hague Holland in close corporation with the municipality of the town of The Hague is working on an ambitious scheme aiming at the realization of a dedicated cruise ship facility around 2013-14. The project is considered as complimentary to the existing facilities in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
The cruise terminal with births for two post Panama Class ships and extensive passengers handling facilities will be part of a multifunctional complex which among others will house a shopping center, hotel congress and exhibition facilities. Underground parking facilities for 1220 cars and a covered passengers dock with capacity for 50 busses, as well as facilities for vans and taxi’s. The project will be embedded in a huge land reclamation of the sea of 50ha. The development of a new harbour village with attractive waterfront, as well as the commercial functions on the cruise terminal complex will pay for the investments for the land reclamation, the coastal protection, marine and land infrastructure. Total investments in infrastructure and real estate are estimated at approximately US$ 1 billion.
A connection to the urban light rail system as well as road connection to the national highway system of the Netherlands and NW Europe is an absolute plus for this project. The Hague is situated just in between Amsterdam and Rotterdam with less than 45 minutes travelling time and is excellent located to deliver all major tourist attractions, cultural events and historical sites in the Netherlands
The vicinity of two international airports (Amsterdam and Rotterdam) within 45 minutes travelling time makes this project pre-eminently fit for functioning as a home port for cruise liners. It is considered that the biggest asset for this new development is the location of the project direct on the Ocean, which allows for extreme short turn around times and easy and safe access. The developers have involved the Miami based architects and consultants Bermello Ajamil to assist in the marketing process and the cruise terminal master plan development.
